KUCHING,  26 September 2022 Tanjong Manis residents in Kampung Paloh and Kampung Berangan will get high-speed internet access at the end of this year following the construction of two towers under the Sarawak Multimedia Authority Rural Telecommunication (SMART) 300 phase one project.

In a statement today, the Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA) said a stable telecommunication network would enable residents in Tanjong Manis to participate in the digital economy by conducting their business online from their villages.

It said villagers of coastal areas in Kampung Paloh, Kampung Kedang and Kampung Berangan, when met at the Mukah Division Social Development Dialogue programme recently, showed that they had gained a better understanding of the digital economy concept pioneered by Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

A resident of Kampung Paloh, Affendi Sahari, 42, told SMA that the availability of an internet network would facilitate the sale of small products via WhatApps among villagers, who are mostly in the B40 group.

“So, my hope is that Kampung Paloh would be equipped with basic infrastructure like roads to help in the marketing of products to areas outside,” Affendi said.

The ‘Tuai Rumah’ of Kampung Berangan, Jawing Jalau, 64, said in line with the Sarawak government’s objective, local residents were prepared to migrate to modern agriculture but telecommunication infrastructure should be upgraded.

The statement said among the products of the three villages are pepper, corn, coconut, banana and fisheries produce.

The programme, organised by the state Women and Children Development and Community Well-being Ministry, was officiated by Tanjung Manis Member of Parliament Yusuf Abdul Wahab, with Sarawak Community Well-being Development Deputy Minister Mohammad Razi Sitam and SMA general manager Zaidi Razak in attendance.
